+ Bunnell first-graders release butterflies
First-grade students at Bunnell Elementary learned about the lifecycle of a butterfly.
As part of their curriculum, each class nurtured caterpillars from the size of a grain of rice into an adult, painted-lady butterfly and released them on campus.
+ Jazz programs join for countywide concert
Instrumental and vocal jazz groups from Buddy Taylor and Indian Trails middle schools, as well as Flagler Palm Coast and Matanzas high schools will come together 6:30 p.m. Monday, May 9, for the third-annual Flagler County “Cool Jazz” Showcase at the Pirate Theater, 3535 Old Kings Road N.
The evening will wrap up by featuring the Lighthouse Little Big Band from St. Augustine, which includes professional musicians from a four-county area.
The evening will consist of music from the big band era, the cool school, hard bop, swing, main stream, latin, jazz rock, blues and modal styles, featuring composers such as Wayne Shorter, Miles Davis, Henry Mancini and Stan Kenton.
“The groups performing at this concert are small by their very nature and hence do not provide a sizeable audience if we count only on their parents to attend,” said Bruce Scott, Indian Trails band and choir director. “Please consider supporting these students by attending.”
+ Matanzas jazz band named best in class at Disney
Fourteen ensembles from high schools across the country participated in the annual Disney Jazz Celebration.
Matanzas High School won a best-in-class award in instrumental Jazz.
There were only one of four bands to receive a superior rating, and one of two bands in Florida. This is the first time Matanzas as participated.
“We have a very vibrant jazz program here,” Steve Knob, band director said.
+ K-Kids at Imagine School clean up Flagler Beach
K-Kids from Imagine School at Town Center helped the A1A Scenic and Historic Coastal Byway organization clean up Flagler Beach.
“The kids that participated were very surprised to see the amount of garbage that is left every day on our beautiful beaches,” said Jacquelyn Janowski.
Students collected empty glass bottles, sandals, cans and hundreds of cigarette butts.
+ FPC takes second at Future Business Leaders conference
The Future Business Leaders of America of Flagler Palm Coast High School recently attended the State Leadership Conference, in Orlando.
Five students competed, and the team of Sara Bell, Ilanya Beckford, Mark Kalaj and Jack Ladson took second place in the state competition for their business financial plan.
They will be heading to the National Leadership Conference in June.
This is the first year the students entered competitive events.
+ Flager Palm Coast band receives straight superiors
The Flagler Palm Coast High School Symphonic Band received straight superior ratings at the 2011 State Music Performance Assessment.
The band and school received its first Otto Kraussaur Award.
