+ Wadsworth Elementary problem solvers take first
Wadsworth Elementary School students took first place at the Future Problem Solvers state conference, in the junior-level Community Problem Solvers competition.
This is the first elementary school team in Flagler County to win at the state level and will be competing at the international competition June 9 to June 12, at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.
The team’s project, Project Pet Pals, targeted the problem of animal abuse in the community by educating people about the importance of spaying and neutering their pets.
Students in the group raised money for the Flagler Humane Society for its spay and neuter program. They also wrote a children’s book about animal abuse and created a magnet for students who hear the story.
In the alternate writing competition, Zachary Loftus’ team won second place, and Daniel Santaella’s team won first.
+ Phoenix students compete in Tropicana Speech
Jayden Lee, a fourth-grade student in Melissa Castaneda’s class at Phoenix Academy, was the overall Tropicana Speech winner for the school. He will advance to countywide competition in April.
Individual class winners: Victoriya Valova, Tiffany McDowell, Will Patin, Arianna Legory, Tyler Wilsey, Tyler Perry, Lisa Scoglio, Ellie Hansen, Jackson Smith, Kelly Robbins and Matthew James.
+ Bunnell students practice speech writing
Fifth- and sixth-grade students at Bunnell Elementary competed in the Tropicana Speech contest, as well. Schoolwide winners, fifth grade: first place, Skylar Loveledy; second place, Marisa Flores; and third place, Sierra Bertram; sixth grade: first place, Angelina Downs; second place, Katie Hall; and third place, Ashley Flores.
