Golfers will tee up Aug. 27, at the Palm Harbor Golf Club, for the second-annual Palm Coast City Golf Championships.
Play will begin 8 a.m. Saturday and also on Sunday during the 36-hole competition.
Jeff Ryan, head golf professional at the Palm Harbor Golf Club, said the tournament is open for the public to watch.
“We’re going to play, rain or shine,” Ryan joked Tuesday, as Hurricane Irene stirred up waves in the Atlantic.
“It might be a little breezy, but we’re going to get it in,” he said.
The tournament will be flighted by handicaps and will include the following divisions: juniors 9 and under; juniors ages 10 to 13; juniors 14 to 17; women’s division; men’s division; and the senior division for golfers older than 55.
Here are three players to watch this weekend:
Mary Rodgers, 17
Rodgers, a senior on the Matanzas golf team, will be competing in her second Palm Coast City Golf Championships. She won the juniors (ages 14 to 17) division last year after shooting a 74 — her personal best at Palm Harbor. Last year’s tournament was one day.
This year, she’ll be competing in the women’s division, and she hopes to win again. Last year’s women’s division winner shot a 75.
Nick Jahn, 14
Jahn, a freshman on the Matanzas golf team, will be competing in his second Palm Coast City Golf Championships. He won the 10 to 13 age division last year, shooting a 36 on nine holes last year. This year, in the 14 to 17 division, he’ll play a full 18 holes each day.
Jahn has been playing golf since he was 2 years old and sports a handicap of 7.
Tyler Averdick, 31
Averdick has a scratch handicap. He has shot a low round of 69 at Palm Harbor. (Palm Harbor’s course record is 63.)
Averdick has played golf his whole life, and this will be his first appearance in the Palm Coast City Golf Championships. He played golf at Ferris State University, in Big Rapids, Mich.
He personal best is a 63, at a course in Kentucky.
