Members and friends of Christ the King Lutheran Church met Thursday, Feb. 3 to take their first steps along the path of sustained community engagement.

“We are not a closed box; we like to go out and do things for people,” said the Rev. Phillip Huebner about his church.

The church, which also operates a school, was founded in July 2007 and occupies an 11-acre parcel on U.S. 1 south of Palm Coast Parkway.

One of the early worship services was held in spite of the lack of electricity or lights at the church.

A group of children were scheduled to sing that Sunday. Founding member Brad Hauer said that, undeterred by the lack of power, they sang “The Lord is My Light.” As they did, he said, power was restored and the lights came on. Hauer said he understood the event as a sign that the church was moving in the right direction and had God on its side.

Community Engagement Facilitator Shemagne O’Keefe will help guide the church in its efforts to engage the community. O’Keefe described the meeting as an invitation to the community to dream about what is possible.

Attendees were invited to identify needs that may provide opportunities for the church to fulfill its mission of reaching out to strengthen the community.

Future expansion plans for Christ the King include construction of a 120,000 square-foot school and community center.
