Grandmothers who are caring for their grandchildren because the children’s parents are in prison due to drugs. A family with five children who are living in a hotel because Hurricane Irma damaged their home. These are some of the families Christmas Come True is working to help.
Flagler Beach resident Nadine King founded the nonprofit in Flagler County nine years ago after moving from Virginia where she began Christmas Come True in the 1980s when the economy crashed.
“I saw everything happen again (here) in 2009,” King said. “It’s just been on my heart to do this. It’s kind of a mission from God. He asked me to do this.”
Christmas Come True provides a complete Christmas dinner, as well as clothes, toys and Christmas stockings, to families in need in Flagler County.
“Those things are all given to the parents while the children are in school so that the parents are the people who are giving it,” she said. “So, it keeps their dignity, it keeps a sense of surprise and pride for the parents who are struggling who can’t afford to do this.”
Last year, the nonprofit gifted new clothes, toys and a Christmas dinner with all the fixings to 154 families, including 407 children.
“This year has just been very difficult for us because there’ve been so many crises throughout the U.S. and Puerto Rico,” King said. “So, we’re struggling ourselves this year, money-wise. If somebody wanted to adopt a family or they wanted to adopt a child, they can do that.”
