Larcenies and robberies have decreased in Flagler County from last year, but the number of vehicle thefts and sex crimes have increased, according to a presentation by Flagler County Sheriff James L. Manfre before the City Council Feb. 16.
"The big news is that crime is still down in Palm Coast by 1.2%, and this is while our overall population has grown," Manfre said. "Overall, crime is down about 5%. And one of the things that dramatically has decreased is the amount of burglaries. ... Our big issue, to be honest with you, this would be a dramatic increase ... it's car burglaries," mostly kids rummaging through unlocked cars at night.
The Sheriff's Office responded to 102,237 calls for service within the city of Palm Coast in 2015, Manfre said.
The Sheriff's Office had an average response time within the city of 5.32 minutes this year, and 5.27 last year; in 2015, 51.32% of calls had a response time of 5 minutes or less.
More than 100 people, including Citizens Observer Program (COPs) volunteers, showed up for the presentation.
The City Council also approved a resolution declaring the week of Feb. 16-22, 2016, as Citizens Observer Program Week.
"You guys and your whole crew do an incredible job for our community," Councilman Jason DeLorenzo said. “You are absolutely critical to what we do and I appreciate all your help, and I’m sure the City Council does, too.”
