Bunnell students win Gridiron Breakfast Challenge

It was cooking time at Jacksonville Jaquar’s EverBank Field where four teams from Florida were chosen to compete in the "Fuel Up to Play 60 Gridiron Breakfast Challenge”. Bunnell Elementary's Wellness Club, led by Cathie Zanella and Danielle Burton have been working on creating recipes for this year’s challenge. Students, Aria Reiter, Jaymes Pringle, Reina Robinson and Faith Buckley submitted their Popeye’s Ricotta Tater Cakes and were selected to compete against three other schools.

After a touch battle, the students won first place for the second year in a row. The judging panel was made up of professionals including James Beard-nominated Chef Hari Pulapaka, Florida Dairy Farmer Linda Lussier and Fuel Up to Play 60 Student Ambassador Bobby Sena.

Flagler Woman’s Club awards $9,000 in scholarships
The Flagler Woman’s Club awarded nine deserving local seniors with $1,000 scholarships. The 2015 recipients are from Flagler Palm Coast High School: Trinity Daley, Hanna Drosdick, Matthew Gartner, Diana Nguyen and Marianna Sbordone; and from Matanzas: Zachery Klopman, Jarlene Peralta-Valerio, Stefano Schibeci and Mikayla Short. The club members will honor these seniors and their families at its annual scholarship luncheon held at the clubhouse in June. Members will also honor their HOBY recipient, Kaitlyn Taley, a sophomore at FPC, and her family, along with major donors Jim Sheehan, Gerard Slovak and the late Mike Freydl.

Palm Coast Arts Foundation awards Ernie Refolo Scholarships
The Palm Coast Arts Foundation presented two Ernie Refolo Scholarships to deserving graduating seniors April 21. The $500 awards were presented to Flagler Palm Coast High School senior Caitlin Burns-Eriser and Matanzas High School senior Dominic M. Davis.

Being the first International Baccalaureate student at FPC to be pursuing the IB Higher Level Theatre study led Burns-Eriser to direct an upcoming school production and create a show using varying styles and cultures in order to provide an in depth understanding of theatre arts. She has theatre experience with the City Repertory Theatre, Flagler Playhouse and the Flagler Auditorium. She plans to pursue a major in musical theatre.

Davis stated in her application “the arts have had an interest in me long before I developed an interest in it. I am a storyteller. Art is not simply a way of doing; it’s a way of seeing.” She plans to pursue a major in communication arts, which will allow her to create stories and characters for what she hopes to be written for future television and movie scripts.

Wadsworth students collect 2,236 pounds of food
Wadsworth Elementary School students participated in a food drive April 1-17, to collect food for the Grace Community Food Pantry. The food drive collected a total of 2,236 pounds of food.

Take Stock in Children welcomes 2020 class
On April 14, 20 middle school students signed agreements to make good grades, meet weekly with their mentor and take advantage of career and college readiness resources offered by the Flagler County Education Foundation Take Stock in Children program. In just a few short years, these students will graduate from high school with a two-year college scholarship and opportunity to receive an additional two-year scholarship after successfully completing the first two years. Nineteen of the 20 scholarships to be awarded are made possible by the Robert and Margaret Osner Endowment.

Matanzas National Honors Society inducts new members
The National Honors Society at Matanzas High School inducted new members last month. National Honors Society is not just honor roll based, but also serves to honor those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service and character.

The 2015 inductees are Veronica Arrascue, Michaela Benvenuto, Kylie Dahlberg, Brendan DiCerbo, Adrian Dos Santos, Allayna Duffy, Megan Dukes, Edgardo Gonzales, Kobi Kane, Ashton Kato, Elizabeth Kirkconnell, Andrew Klopman, Simon Krassner, Nicholas Kubiet, Micayla Lavaglio, Bryan Lemus, Kaylee Mandt, Bianca Robinson, Storm Schalit, Abiel Souverain, Erin Tice, Payton Tucker, Jailyn Van Horn, Max Wolf and Shana Wolf.
