Q: Why do you think you've been awarded Teacher of the Year?
A: My dedication to Bunnell Elementary has created a teacher leader inside me. I am the kind of person who likes action. If I see a problem, my reaction is to find a way to solve it. I want to surround myself with teachers who aren’t afraid to say what they don’t know but in turn are not afraid to share what they do know. I have served on the school’s leadership team for multiple years where I can provide a voice and create plans of actions for issues that face the teachers on my team and at my school.
Q: Why do you love teaching?
A: I was fortunate enough to have an incredible family and amazing teachers who encouraged, challenged, but most importantly prepared me for a future without limitation. As a result, these early experiences directed my path toward becoming the educator I am today. My inspiration comes from starting each day with a challenge. I want to give my students the same experiences I had. My teachers were not “easy” on me and their desire to provoke me to greatness fuels me to do the same. I was first in my family to go to college. I believe I can pass this on to my students everyday.
Q: How long have you been teaching (at Bunnell specifically and in general)? What subject do you teach? What grade?
A: I have been a teacher for 15 years and have been a proud Bullpup for the past 12 years. I began teaching second grade, then looped to third and stayed in third for a few years before moving up to fourth. The past two years I have been the ESE support facilitator for fourth grade.
Q: How would you describe your teaching style? What's unique about you and your classroom that could have contributed to you earning Teacher of the Year?
A: My teaching style is stern but silly. I believe that kids are at school to learn and teaching causes learning. But, I also like to have fun with kids. A child's smile is priceless.
