The Buddy Taylor Middle School football program is 6-2 in the crosstown rivalry.

Buddy Taylor Middle School captured its sixth Belle Terre Bowl title Wednesday, Oct. 26, after defeating Indian Trails, 47-13, at Matanzas High School.

It was the eighth meeting between the two schools since the middle school programs.

Buddy Taylor coach Mike Garrett said the programs make great feeders for Flagler Palm Coast and Matanzas high schools. Garrett is in his third season with Buddy Taylor.

“Middle school football is alive and well,” Garrett said, noting that there are a handful of players he coached last year who are on Flagler Palm Coast’s varsity team this season. “There definitely is value, and the quicker we can get to these guys, and the quicker we can get them educated (on the game of football), that’s a win-win for everybody.”

Buddy Taylor’s team is associated with FPC, while Indian Trails is linked to Matanzas’ program.

This is the second season that both schools are playing a full schedule. They both joined the St. Johns County league, and will play 10 games this season, including a bowl game to finish the season.

In years past, Garrett said, the teams would travel to various areas just to play enough games to make a season worth it.

“We would really scramble to fill that schedule,” Garrett said.

Buddy Taylor (8-1) has two more games this season. So far, the Eagles have scored 334 points, while allowing 90 points against.
