+ City considers pill mill moratorium
The Palm Coast City Council appears ready to follow in Flagler County’s footsteps and declare a moratorium on new pill mills — pain clinics that prescribe addictive pain pills without sufficient oversight.
Sheriff Donald Fleming said pain clinics are being shut down in South Florida, and he recommended a moratorium here to prevent illegal clinics from migrating to the city.
+ Palm Coast boy, 12, rescued from ruins
A 12-year-old Palm Coast boy got an unexpected ride in a helicopter Tuesday, Nov. 23, after he got lost in Bulow Plantation Ruins State Park, in Flagler County.
Barak Ordonez got separated from his mother, Shanna Ordonez, and her boyfriend, Raymond Surdam, around 4:50 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 23, when he and two of his siblings attempted to run ahead as the family was hiking. Barak took a wrong path that led him into a swamp.
Flagler County Sheriff’s deputies and the Flagler Beach Fire Department launched a ground search, while Flagler County’s Fireflight and the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office’s Air One took to the air. Flagler County Emergency Services initiated a Code Red reverse call message to homes in the area to notify residents of the missing child.
Around 6 p.m., rescuers located the youngster nearly 15 miles into the marsh, but they were unable to reach him by foot because of the water, brush and marsh.
Cpl. Jamie Roster, of the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office, waded into the marsh, where he recovered the boy and stayed with him until Fireflight lifted the boy up around 8 p.m. He then was flown to the Flagler County Airport where he was reunited with his family.
