Of more than 800 Flagler teachers, 11 are teaching outside their certification.

In reference to this year’s out-of-field teacher report, presented to the School Board Monday, Nov. 11, Superintendent Janet Valentine called the numbers “incredible.”

Of more than 800 total teachers employed in Flagler County, 11 were listed as teaching outside of their fields of certification (see side box for the teachers, their schools, subjects and areas of expertise).

The results, usually released in February, were issued early due to Skyward Family Access, the district’s new online data platform.

“We’re very pleased to say, those are the only out-of-field teachers we have,” Valentine said, in reference to the 11.

She added after the meeting that she’s noticed a downward trend, in recent years, in the number of instructors teaching out of their areas of specialization.

“We’ve pushed really hard (to get here),” she said.

Out-of-field teachers usually only stay out of field for a year, she added, before a position opens up for them elsewhere.

Board adds ‘sexting’ policy
In addition to adding a “sexting” article to its administrative prohibitions, the School Board refined some of its policy guidelines Tuesday, Nov. 1.

Its curriculum and instruction polices were tweaked, allowing private-school students to be eligible to participate in public school sports at schools zoned for the physical address of the student’s home.

Procedures to address transitional issues faced by children of military families were also formalized.

A new policy was addressed, as well, specifying service-animal regulations. Service animals, in the policy, are identified as “personal property,” which cannot be brought on campus without the knowledge and permission of administrators.

The policy identifies a service animal as any dog that is trained to perform tasks, such as guiding or alerting visually or hearing-impaired students, retrieving objects, pulling a wheelchair or assisting with mobility, balance and more.
