Blanket drive to keep 719 warm

Alayne McDonald’s garage is overflowing. And that’s a good thing.

Her blanket drive, which she called Let’s Help Japan, collected 719 blankets and $450 in donations from Palm Coast, a family member in New York, and the Asian American Club, in Palm Coast.

“I accomplished so much more in these few weeks then I ever expected to,” McDonald said via e-mail. “I am so pleased with everyone's support.”

She said Lowe's and Ace Hardware donated heavy-duty yard bags, which will be used to ship the blankets through Mission Harvest, to Japan.

McDonald’s older brother is stationed in Japan, in the U.S. Navy.

“This blanket drive has made me feel so much closer to my brother in Japan,” she wrote. “I feel like Flagler County has made a huge difference, and I hope everyone who donated is proud of themselves.”
