When did you arrive in Flagler County? What brought you here?
I arrived in Flagler County in 2005, after living in many different areas of Florida. I spent eight years in Gainesville also, and the weather of Flagler is similar, plus we are on I-95, which makes travel easy — and you have the beach. It's an ideal location in Florida for quality living.
I spent most of my hairstyling life in New York City, working in the lower Manhattan area. Having spent many years managing a corporate salon, I decided to open a salon in the midst of the pandemic because sitting home made me think a lot about the future. Not being particularly happy in my former place, I took the plunge to open Transitions Salon.
Some of my co-workers joined me in this new venture. The response has been very positive. My stylists are Toni (does hair and permanent makeup), Cecilia (does hair and eyelashes), my sister Libby (does all hair services). I have been a board certified hair colorist for years, so I specialize in that area. We wanted a stress free place where clients would feel at home. Did I say three of us are New Yorkers?
What is new in your business?
We are looking into expanding our services very soon to include hair extensions, as well as full body waxing. We are that confident of our success in this community.
What have you learned about leadership from running your business, and what is your leadership style?
I have always believed that if you treat people well, they will respond in kind. I feel we have to work as a team in all areas. I don't feel like a boss; I am a team leader.
What have been the biggest obstacles to running your business? How have you overcome them?
It has been a daily challenge to deal with the COVID issues out there, but people are very understanding when we ask them to mask up. Our salon is a calm place with great work. We are an extended family to our clients, and we like that feeling.
