James Antoine is a second grader in the Exceptional Student Education program at Belle Terre Elementary School and was chosen as the face of the Florida Department of Education’s 35th anniversary of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, I.D.E.A.

“James’ story represents all of the kids that I advocate for,” said his teacher, Alexis Prince.  “He is the example of their desire to learn.”

Antoine’s story and photo are displayed in the main hallway on the sixth floor of the Turlington Building, in Tallahassee.

Here is Antoine’s story as written by his teacher:

“In 2008, James was reported to have virtually no language or speech, and he was very shy. He was unable to count two or three objects or point to letters. He could not say the days of the week or the months of the year.

“This young man can now read 41 words out loud in less than two minutes. He can randomly read all of the months of the year and the days of the week, as well as speak them out loud. James can independently count to 100 and perform one-to-one object correspondence up to 100.

“James always has a big smile for everyone. He has a great desire to learn and has become a class role model for his ability to follow class rules and work cooperatively with other students. His classmates often call on him to help them finish their work.

“He is a delight to have in class. With the desire and work ethic that James has demonstrated, there are no limits to what he can ultimately achieve.”
