Bank of America has donated $10,000 to the Carver Center, 203 E. Drain St., Bunnell.

According to County Commissioner Barbara Revels, who among others has made the success of the Carver Center a personal mission, the latest donation increases the total funds raised for the center to $23,000.

Revels said an online auction raised about $7,000, to add to the original donation of $5,000 from the Kiwanis Club.

Of the Kiwanis Club, Revels said, “They stepped up to the plate before anybody did, and it was wonderful.”

In one of the earliest meetings discussing the future of the Carver Center, Revels said, the organizers chipped in $100 each (about $1,000 total) on the spot to help pay for filing fees. In addition, attorney Dennis Bayer contributed his work for free to help the organization earn nonprofit status.

The Rev. Elijah Emanuel, of Fellowship Restorational Church, 2550 N. U.S. 1., Bunnell, also is one of the leaders at the Carver Center.

“I appreciate everyone that’s getting involved to help restore this Carver Center to give our community something to have pride in," he said. "I’m happy for that. A lot of people are reaching out. It seems like it’s headed in the direction where everybody in Flagler County would be pleased.”

Emanuel said the Carver Center has always been valuable to the community, but not everyone has been aware of it. But with the recent renovations (including stairs, floors and bathroom improvements), the facility will attract even more.

“It will give these kids a chance to have another avenue to do positive things,” Emanuel said.

The Carver Center needs mentors and committed volunteers, he added. Call 437-7455.
