A total of 180 third- to sixth-graders competed in the countywide program.

Parents were going wild. Brothers, sisters, grandparents were glued to the outer edges of the five mats. Elementary-school wrestlers battled Sunday, Oct. 23, in the final weekend for the Bad Boy Wrestling Club series. In all, 180 athletes competed.

FPC wrestling coach Bobby Bossardet said the turnout was more than he ever could have imagined.

Most of these wrestlers eventually attend Flagler Palm Coast and Matanzas high schools. Every coach knows that creating a feeder program helps builds championships.

“We’re very happy with the way everything went,” Bossardet said. “It’s been a busy few months but it’s definitely going to pay off in the next few years. It was a great time.”

The idea for the program originated with an assistant coach at FPC, who helped with a similar program in Chattanooga, Tenn.

That program has helped develop state champions at the high school level. Though FPC and Matanzas are a few years away from seeing those kinds of results, the road starts now.

The Bad Boy program lasted six weeks, which included training throughout the week at each elementary school, followed by tournaments on Sundays, at FPC.

There were four total tournaments, with the program’s culmination being Oct. 23.

Third- and fourth-graders and then fifth- and sixth-graders were broken up by weight into eight-man brackets.

Then wrestlers battled it out to become to countywide champions.

Old Kings Elementary won the overall team championship for third- and fourth-graders. Bunnell Elementary won the overall team championship for fifth- and sixth-graders.
