PALM COAST — The Redistricting Commission met for the second time at 2 p.m. June 2 and unanimously confirmed the report written by staff and recommended the proposed zone changes to the Palm Coast City Council ahead of the city’s general election, which will take place later this year.

Concerned the Palm Coast City Offices wouldn’t be able to accommodate residents, staff moved the meeting to the Community Center.

The meeting drew about 50 residents; most were in agreement that the zone the Redistricting Commission recommended isn’t “fair”; some called the process a “sham.”

Those chants escalated when Louis McCarthy, the appointed chairman of the group, decided not to let Bill McGuire, a Palm Coast resident and City Council candidate, speak as the public comment portion was closed.

McCarthy said McGuire didn’t walk up to the podium before he closed public comment; McGuire said he signed in on the sheet to speak. McCarthy didn’t budge, and his decision drew other reprimands from the public: “Dictatorship!” one resident said. “Sham!” said another. Another: “I move to disband this committee!”

The City Council will have its first reading on this matter at a June 14 special meeting. District 3 candidate Dennis Cross will no longer be able to run if the zone changes are passed.
