The Flagler County School Board formalized its advertising policy Tuesday, Nov. 1, allowing ads on all property but buses.

When Mike Judd, the Flagler Schools risk manager, presented a revised advertising policy to the School Board Nov. 1, he explained that it would allow more advertising but also add some restrictions.

In a continuation of ad talks that began in August, Judd explained that the policy would allow for advertising on school websites, newsletters, newspapers, supplies, clothing, signs, uniforms and other venues.

Principals would still maintain approval rights on the content and form of all marketing.

Ads may not include profanity or indecent language; slander/libel; the promotion of alcohol, tobacco, drugs or any product not legally permitted to minors; harassing speech or expression; or political/religious messages.

“We don’t want Budweiser advertising in local high schools,” he said.

Although earlier drafts of the policy would have allowed for ads on school buses, as well, Judd explained that that aspect has been rethought.

Citing the yellow paint, reflectors and bright stickers, he said: “We’ve done everything we can to say, ‘Notice me’ … Why we want to dilute that by putting advertising on it?”

The board approved the policy unanimously.

Valentine said ads will most likely start on the www.FlaglerSchools.com website, then move onto the district’s white fleet trucks.
