Palm Coast Mayor David Alfin is challenging all of Flagler County to get active in the New Year by logging 30 miles in 30 days. Do you have what it takes? The Mayor's 30/30 Fitness Challenge is a jumpstart to a healthy new year! If you're late, don't worry; you can sign up any time.

Mayor Alfin is inviting all of Flagler County to join the competition to encourage the entire community to get active together! Whether you join a team or challenge yourself as a solo competitor, the goal is to move for at least one mile per day for 30 days. The City of Palm Coast has organized a multitude of activities for you to participate in, or choose your favorite activity to complete on your own or with your workout partners. We have a variety of opportunities for residents of all ages to Explore, Connect, and Play in Palm Coast!

Special Events for January:

January 3 through February 1 – Mayor’s 30/30 Community Fitness Challenge – Monday, January 3-February 1, throughout Flagler County. Get outdoors and get active - join us for the Mayor’s 30/30 Challenge! The challenge is to move at least a mile a day for the 30 days. You can choose your own form of exercise. January 6 – Imagination Builders – Thursday, January 6, 10-11am at Palm Coast Community Center, 305 Palm Coast Pkwy. NE. Using Duplo Blocks, Lincoln Logs, Fiddlesticks and other interactive activities, create an imaginary world with your child! Toddlers and their parents will have an enjoyable hands-on experience exploring and learning inventive ways to build and collaborate with each other. Let your child’s imagination be stimulated through patterns, colors, counting, position/ordering, compare/contrast, and fine/gross motor skills. For ages 3-5 years. January 7 – Book Club Social Corner: Best Sellers, Past or Present - Friday, January 7, 10:30-11:30am at Palm Coast Community Center, 305 Palm Coast Pkwy. NE. Do you love to read? Each month will have a designated genre – January’s is Best Sellers, Past or Present. You select and purchase a book that falls within the monthly category. January 7-28 – Winter Laser Tag League – Friday, January 7-28, 6:30-9pm at Palm Coast Community Center, 305 Palm Coast Pkwy. NE. Do you like games like Halo and Call of Duty? Maybe you just like laser tag? Parks & Recreation is hosting a Laser Tag League, where the winners will get medals and a trophy. January 8 – Christmas Tree Recycling – Saturday, January 8, 8am-1pm at the Fuel Depot, 22 Utility Dr. Drop off your expired Christmas tree and receive a free 3-gallon evergreen tree in exchange. Please remove all decorations, lights, tinsel, and ornaments prior to drop-off. Also included is Paper Shredding, Electronics & Christmas Light Recycling. January 8 – Mayor’s 30/30 Workout with the Sheriffs – Saturday, January 8, 10-11am at Central Park, 975 Central Ave. Head down to Central Park and join Commander Goncalves and the Flagler County Sheriff's Office for a brisk walk and workout. January 10 – Mayor’s 30/30 Nature Walk at Long Creek – Thursday, January 10, 10-11am at Long Creek Nature Preserve, 1050 Palm Harbor Pkwy. Get in your Mayor's 30/30 miles while learning about the ecology at Long Creek Nature Preserve. Join Urban Forester Carol for a spirited walk around Long Creek, all while exploring the flora, fauna, and trees that make up this beautiful park. Please wear comfortable walking shoes and bring a water bottle. Please be advised that there are no restroom facilities at Long Creek Nature Preserve, so plan ahead. For all ages. Children will be exposed to cooking vocabulary, techniques, tools, utensils, and kitchen safety. Some recipes may not be appropriate for those with food allergies. $40/session. January 10 through February 28 – Monday Funday – Monday, January 10-February 28, 10-11am at Palm Coast Community Center, 305 Palm Coast Pkwy. NE. This Child with parent program will provide an enjoyable and educational environment for your child to explore social, emotional, physical, and cooperative play opportunities through movement, music, interactions, and problem-solving skills while having fun with their peers. January 10 through March 2 – Junior Development Tennis – Mondays and Wednesdays, January 10-March 2, 6-7:30pm at Palm Coast Tennis Center, 1290 Belle Terre Pkwy. Teens will benefit from practicing tennis skills on a full-sized 78’ court with full compression balls. Games, activities, and drills are used to improve sportsmanship, stroke formation, movement, strategy, and determination, all within a safe, social and supportive environment. $216/session. January 11 through March 8 – Munchkin ABC’s & 123’s – Tuesdays, January 11-March 8, 10-11am at Palm Coast Community Center, 305 Palm Coast Pkwy. NE. Children will learn about letters and numbers through themed learning, snacks, hands-on crafts, and activities! This is a full immersion program for toddlers to help support language, cognition, and fine motor skills in a fun, healthy, and dynamic way. For ages 3-5 years. $25/session. January 11 – Bellies and Babies – Tuesday, January 11, 4:30-5:30pm at Palm Coast Community Center, 305 Palm Coast Pkwy. NE. A gathering for new mothers and moms-to-be, Bellies and Babies is designed to support women during pregnancy, new motherhood, and breastfeeding. Go from feeling unsure to “I got this,” all while building friendships in a supportive environment. January 11 through March 3 – Red Rallies Tennis – Tuesdays and Thursdays, January 11-March 3, 5-6pm at Palm Coast Tennis Center, 1290 Belle Terre Pkwy. Kids ages 6 through 8 will enjoy a fun and active introduction to the sport of tennis! Games, activities, and age-appropriate drills will teach your child the basics of the game. January 12 – Cooking Matters in Your Community – Wednesday, January 12, 11:30am-12:30pm at Palm Coast Community Center, 305 Palm Coast Pkwy. NE. Cooking Matters in Your Community will follow key nutrition messages and will include a food demonstration, tips, activities, and recipes to learn how to eat healthy while on a budget. Activities and recipes are accessible and affordable to limited-resource families. The UF IFAS Family Nutrition Program provides nutrition education to SNAP participants, low-income individuals who are eligible to participate in SNAP, low-income individuals who are eligible to participate in other federal assistance programs, and individuals residing in low-income communities. Learn the game in a friendly, fast-paced environment! Each week the Tennis Center’s certified professional coaching staff will teach a 60-minute instructional clinic focusing on the fundamentals. Each clinic will include a series of activities and games that are designed to develop specific athletic and tennis skills. NE. This hands-on cooking experience teaches youth basic cooking skills, nutrition, and food safety. January 14 – Mayor’s 30/30 Ruck with the National Guard Readiness Center and Councilman Barbosa – Friday, January 14, 9-10:30am at Wadsworth Park, 2200 Moody Blvd., Flagler Beach. Set out on a ruck with Recreation Supervisor and Army veteran Jared, Councilman Barbosa, and the National Guard Readiness Center! Never rucked before? It's a military walk with a loaded backpack. All you need is a sturdy backpack, weighted with bricks, sandbags, clean laundry, plates, etc. to your comfort level, and some good walking shoes. January 14 – Lunch N’ Lecture: Water Conservation with St. Johns River Water Management District – Friday, January 14, 11am-12:30pm at Palm Coast Community Center, 305 Palm Coast Pkwy. NE. January 15 – First Aid and CPR/AED Course – Saturday, January 15, 9am-4pm at Palm Coast Community Center, 305 Palm Coast Pkwy. NE. Heartsaver First Aid is a 7-hour classroom course (includes 1 hour for lunch) that is designed to meet OSHA regulations. The course teaches basic first aid skills: administering CPR to an infant, young child, or an adult; using an Automated External Defibrillator (AED); using a mask or barrier device; how to stop visible bleeding; assist with possible sprain or broken bone; securing the scene for safety. January 15 – Historical Society Speakers Series: Presidents in Florida – Saturday, January 15, 10am-12pm at Palm Coast Community Center, 305 Palm Coast Pkwy. NE. George Washington had nothing but trouble with Florida. Thomas Jefferson tried to steal it. Abraham Lincoln hoped it would win him re-election. Three men came to Florida to fight and ended up in the White House. Franklin Roosevelt was nearly assassinated before he could be inaugurated and quick thinking by a Secret Service agent saved John Kennedy’s life in Florida. Herbert Hoover learned about Al Capone and Warren G. Harding got stuck on a Florida sandbar. Learn about America’s presidents’ strange relationship with our state. January 24 – Dolphin and Whale Walk with Marineland – Monday, January 24, 12-1pm at Varn Park, 3665 N. Oceanshore Blvd, Flagler Beach. Get in your Mayor's 30/30 miles while learning about the dolphins and whales that inhabit the ocean waters of our coast. Join Terran, Manager of Community Development with Marineland Dolphin Adventure, for a brisk beach walk. She'll tell you all about these fascinating mammals and we'll keep an eye on the horizon for any distant fin-sightings! Please wear comfortable walking shoes and bring a water bottle. January 27 – Quit Your Way. Stop Tobacco – Thursday, January 27, 6-8pm at Palm Coast Community Center, 305 Palm Coast Pkwy. NE. This single-session program will provide you with the valuable tools you need to help you quit tobacco. These include: creating a quit plan, learning strategies and skills to deal with nicotine cravings to remain tobacco-free, dealing with slips, having the opportunity to share your experience with others in a friendly, respectful and supportive group setting, as well as FREE patches, gum, or lozenges, if medically appropriate. January 29 – Historical Society Speakers Series: Before Jamestown: Europeans, Africans, And Indians In La Florida, 1513–1607 – Saturday, January 29, 10am-12pm at Palm Coast Community Center, 305 Palm Coast Pkwy. The early history of European settlements in Florida with a focus on Florida’s rich yet largely neglected Spanish colonization, which began nearly a century before Jamestown with St. Augustine, the first European settlement of North America established in 1513. Tuesdays – Diabetes Prevention – Tuesdays, 9-10am at Palm Coast Community Center, 305 Palm Coast Pkwy. NE. The National Diabetes Prevention Program (NDPP) is presented in partnership with the Florida Department of Health. The National Diabetes Prevention Program was created for individuals diagnosed with pre-Diabetes or who are at risk for developing Type 2 Diabetes. The DPP is a year-long program, consisting of 8 weekly core sessions followed by 16 bi-weekly post-core sessions. Free, but registration and a referral are required. Tuesdays – Gentle Yoga – Tuesdays, 10:30-11:30am at Palm Coast Community Center, 305 Palm Coast Pkwy. NE. Start experiencing the many benefits of yoga through this safe and gentle modified chair version. Yoga work is done either standing or in a chair and includes low-impact stretching and strengthening, as well as breathing routines led by certified instructor Michele Cotto. Tuesdays – Diabetes Self-Management Education - Tuesdays, 1-3pm at Palm Coast Community Center, 305 Palm Coast Pkwy. NE. Diabetes Self-Management Education classes are facilitated and taught by a Registered Dietitian from The Florida Department of Health. You will first have a one-on-one assessment, which is then followed by three 2-hour long weekly sessions and 1 follow-up session.
