A driver crashed into a garage in the first block of Barrister Lane in Palm Coast on Sunday Dec. 4.

The driver of the Dodge pickup truck drove into the support beam of a home’s garage just after 3:30 a.m. According to the charging affidavit, the 18-year-old driver was intoxicated and initially fled the scene of the crash.

There were no reported injuries.

When deputies arrived on the scene, the 18-year-old was found several houses down from the crash. The deputy noted in the report that he could smell alcohol on the young man’s breath and that his words were slurred.

The young man told Flagler County Sheriff Office deputies that he had a few mixed alcohol drinks before the incident. He said he left his home because he had an argument with his father and needed to cool off, according to the report.

The man told deputies he saw a shadow cross the road in front of his car and swerved the truck to avoid hitting it, causing him to jump the curb, go across the grass and into the garage beam.

Deputies administered a field sobriety test and took two breath samples; the samples measured his blood alcohol content as .087 and .090.

FCSO has RING camera footage of the man leaving the vehicle and leaving the scene on foot, where the 18-year-old said he called his mother. The man was arrested and taken to the county jail, but posted bail on Wednesday Dec. 7.

He is facing three misdemeanor charges, according to the clerk of courts website: first-degree DUI and reckless driving charges, with property damage, and a second-degree leaving a hit-and-run accident without leaving identification.
