UPDATE: 2:30 p.m. Aug. 29:
Human bones found by construction workers laying a foundation at a beachfront Hammock Dunes property are at least 150 years old, according to the Flagler County Sheriff's Office.
"Based on this information, there is no relationship to any open case the FCSO is currently working. There is no foul play suspected," a Sheriff's Office news release issued Aug. 29 stated.
Workers found the bones at about 12:20 p.m. Aug. 25 while laying a foundation at 45 Calle Del Sur, and called the Sheriff's Office, prompting deputies and the medical examiner's office to investigate.
“We’re trying to get a good date on how old they are," Flagler County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Jim Troiano said. "We’re potentially looking at a historical site.”
To find out more, the Sheriff’s Office and other agencies are working with the Gainesville-based C.A. Pound Human Identification Laboratory, which can analyze the bones to determine age, sex, ethnicity and how long they were in the ground, Troiano said.
In the meantime, construction work at the site at 45 Calle Del Sur has stopped, and a deputy has been posted there to protect the location as investigators work to determine if it may have cultural significance.
“This is not unusual, if you look at Florida and our history,” Troiano said. “There are artifacts and historical sites that are unearthed throughout the state. … We can find canoes, and artifacts and arrowheads and different pottery.”
