The African American Cultural Society celebrated Juneteenth, the anniversary of the emancipation from slavery on June 19, 1865, on June 18, at the Cultural Center on U.S. 1.
The AACS celebration not only reflects on the termination of slavery but also is a time to acknowledge the attendees' ancestors. Guests were welcome to say the name of their loved ones they remembered. Each name was followed with, “ashay,” meaning, "Be with us."
This year’s ceremony included a song to the ancestors by Alexis Williams, a dance tribute by Angel Hopkins and a martial arts demonstration by the Moo Do Academy.
“It’s giving the younger generation a continuity of what has gone before,” said Shirley Jacob, chairwoman of the Ways and Means Committee for AACS.
