A Palm Coast man was arrested Tuesday, June 26, on a warrant for grand theft and organized fraud less than $20,000, after Flagler County Sheriff’s detectives charged him with stealing from his grandmother.
Christopher Emlit, 30, of 68 Woodworth Drive, is being held at the Flagler County Inmate Facility, on $25,000 bond.
Detectives said that Emlit’s 80-year-old grandmother reported jewelry stolen from her Palm Coast home in April 2011. She told detectives that when she went to visit her daughter, Emlit would go to her house on Woodlawn Lane and steal checks and credit cards.
Detectives suspect Emlit of stealing his grandmother’s jewelry, as well, forging her name on checks totaling about $8,000 and charging almost $5,000 on one of her credit cards.
Additional charges are pending.
Sheriff’s Detective Ronn Rauber said, at one point, Emlit confessed to the thefts when questioned by his grandmother. Family members believed he was taking money for alcohol and prescription pills.
“The prescription pill epidemic is demoralizing and destroying families, not just here in Flagler County, but all over the country,” said Flagler County Sheriff Donald W. Fleming. “Perhaps he can now get help with his addictions.”
