The Flagler County Sheriff’s Office will be conducting a stepped up campaign this weekend to identify impaired drivers.

“The weekend marks the end of Bike Week. We want all of our residents and visitors to enjoy the festivities, but more importantly, we want them to return safely to their homes,’ Sheriff Donald W. Fleming said.

The Sheriff’s Office will also be participating in a statewide campaign of DUI enforcement sponsored by the Florida Department of Transportation. The campaign is under way in conjunction with St. Patrick’s Day, which is Thursday, March 17.

The state program, “Designate a Sober Driver this St. Patrick’s Day,” supports the national impaired driver’s campaign, “Buzzed Driving is Drunk Driving.”

“For many Americans, St. Patrick’s Day has become a popular night out to celebrate with friends and family. Drive responsibly and be alert to increased motorcycle traffic on the roadways,” a release states.

In 2009, 37% of the drivers and motorcyclists involved in fatal crashes on St. Patrick’s Day had a blood-alcohol content of .08 or above, according to statistics provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

“If you plan on celebrating this holiday with alcohol, designate a driver before the party begins,” Fleming said.
