Dave Hertle works on something different for every project. "The Man in the Moon" took him about eight hours to complete. Jim Oehmke has been a member of the Wood Carvers for about four months, and only carves caricatures. "I've tried other stuff but I just lose interest," he said. In his life, he's made about 50 caricatures, which he keeps photos of in a scrapbook by his workstation. John Schumacher is called a "master" and "artiste" by some members of the Carvers club. It took him about 2.5 months to make this piece.

The Palm Coast Wood Carvers met Tuesday, Jan. 24, in a room toward the back of James Holland Park, continuing a tradition more than 20 years strong.

Bud Tanis, the club’s instructor, took over the Carvers in 1991, back when there were only six members. Now, with upward of 25 carvers, the group meets weekly to work with wood, refine their craft and share accomplishments.

“Once you start doing it, it becomes your life,” Jan Catina, who’s been in the club a year, said of woodcarving. “I’m addicted.”

And almost all the 20-odd other members there agreed.

“It’s a nice group,” said Kitty Crouse, a newer club member. It’s the kind where everybody talks and shares secrets, she added. While they work, they laugh and tell stories.
