+ Matanzas DECA: We’re going to Disneyworld!
Seven students from the Matanzas High School DECA Chapter have made it to the Florida DECA 53rd Annual Career Development Conference. The competition lasts from Feb. 28 to March 3, and takes place in the Hilton at Downtown Disney at Lake Buena Vista.
At this competition, students participate in business-related role plays and written tests for a chance to attend the DECA International Career Development Conference in Anaheim, Calif. The students competing in individual events are Giovanni Gonzalez in Accounting Applications, Jonathan Guilbe in Business Services Marketing, and George Lockett in Principles of Business Management and Administration. Luis Marcalo and Morgan Valentik are competing in a team event for Buying and Merchandising Team Decision Making, while Nicole Corder and Kristyn Steffens are competing in a team event for Travel and Tourism Team Decision Making.

+ Phoenix Academy named Apple Distinguished Program
Phoenix Academy has been named an Apple Distinguished Program for 2012-2013 school year for its 1-to-1 laptop technology program.
The Apple Distinguished Program designation is reserved for programs that meet criteria for innovation, leadership, and educational excellence, and demonstrate Apple¹s vision of exemplary learning environments.
Hands-on service and project-based learning are integrated with science, technology, engineering and math in the clasrooms, leading to highly engaged students involved in authentic, real-world learning activities.
+ Nailed it: FTI offers night nail specialist program
Flagler County Schools’ Flagler Technical Institute is now offering an evening nail specialist program beginning Jan. 22, for those students who are not available during the daytime hours. Class meets 6-9 p.m. Monday through Thursday.

+ Smith named good citizen
Aliyah Smith, of Flagler Palm Coast High School, was honored with the Daughters of the American Revolution Good Citizen Award. This award is intended to encourage and reward the qualities of good citizenship.
The program is open to all seniors enrolled in accredited public or private secondary schools. FPC accepts nominations for the award from faculty members and then asked the senior class to select one DAR Good Citizen from the top four nominees. This year’s top four comprised Joseph Alter, Maeve Dineen, A.J. Torres and Smith.
Smith serves as the Student Government Association president and is a member of the school Photo Club. She has completed hundreds of community service hours during her years at FPC, volunteering for things such as Relay for Life, Dinner with Santa and beach clean-ups. She has also facilitated workshops for middle school and high school students on topics such as drugs and alcohol awareness, surviving high school and bullying awareness.
