On a two-game winning streak, the Seabreeze girls basketball team is beginning to click.

Turkey and stuffing (or whatever the players decide to eat) this week might taste extra delicious for those on the Seabreeze girls basketball team.

The Lady Sandcrabs are currently on a two-game winning streak and won’t play again until Dec. 3 (at home against district foe Pine Ridge).

Seabreeze opened its season with a tough loss to Flagler Palm Coast, nearly getting doubled up in points. After that game, coach Avery Johnson said he wasn’t happy with how his team started. The scoreboard reflected that, although the players played with more second-half energy, Johnson said.

At the time, he hoped his team would come out with more fire in the following games.

So far, so good. The team is now 4-2 at the break.

Coming off district wins against Matanzas and New Smyrna Beach, Johnson said his team is finally starting to click on the hardwood.

In the first home game of the season against New Smyrna Beach, Seabreeze was outsocred in the first quarter, 11-5. But the Lady Sandcrabs managed to score 17 points in the second quarter, and New Smyrna Beach only put up two points. Twelve of the 17 second-quarter points came on four 3-pointers by sophomore McKenzie Bowlus, who tallied 16 points in the game.

Seabreeze went on to win the game, 47-38.

Zhamaria Bell and Lazoya Watson both scored in double-digits.

There’s a lot of season left. Johnson knows that. But picking up district wins is important.

“Our young ladies are young and beginning to gel and have fun,” Johnson said. “It’s still early in the season for us, so we will continue to work hard and play hard.”
