Franssen named business employee of the year

The Florida Small Business Development Center, at Daytona State College, has named Nancy Franssen, a senior assistant, its regional employee of the year.

A former paralegal, and SBDC worker since 2005, Franssen has been the “go-to person when it comes to keeping the administrative side of the house operating efficiently and effectively,” said Ned Harper, facility director.

Local mediators recognized nationally

Ormond Beach’s Sandra and John Upchuch, of Upchurch Watson White & Max mediation firm, in Daytona Beach, attended the Florida Bar Annual Convention last month, where John Upchurch spoke about his experience working with the courts following the death of Dale Earnhardt, in 2001, and how mediation can be used in creative ways to avoid formal cases.

John Upchurch was also ranked third among United States mediators by the National Law Journal in April. The ranking was conducted through a national survey of 5,000 readers, and Upchurch was the only mediator in the Southeast to be a finalist.

Upchurch formed his practice in 1996, after being elected the youngest circuit judge in Florida history, in 1976, and as a charter member of the Florida Supreme Court Committee on Mediation and Arbitration, in 1989. He was also selected in 2005 to the Academy of Court Appointed Masters, and in 2012, he was inducted to the International Who’s Who of Commercial Mediation.

The Cumberland School of Law at Samford University, in Birmingham, Ala., also honored Rodney A. Max as its 2013 Distinguished Alumnus of the Year earlier this year. Max’s mediation practice extends to all areas of civil litigation, particularly mass and class actions and complex catastrophic injury or damage cases.
