With the recent resignation of the Flagler Playhouse’s Executive Director Stephen Pigman, the organization will be looking to two new and one veteran director to finish out the season.
“When Stephen came to us, we weren’t looking for an executive director but his expertise seemed to match our need at that time,” said board president Pat Love.
The board had a vision and she said that with Pigman, it all happened at lightning speed. Not only was he instrumental in getting the new seats installed, but he also introduced the playhouse to St. Augustine talent, which the board hopes to keep utilizing.
“We don’t want the community to feel that we are not looking for an artistic person to come and assist us — at this point in time we don’t have the funds to hire a full time person,” Love said. “If we could find someone who is interested in using their artistic skills as a volunteer to put a mark on our theater we would certainly welcome that.”
Love will direct the upcoming show “SHOUT! The Mod Musical,” which takes the stage 7:30 p.m., for ten shows, including a special Thursday night show, Jan. 24 and Sunday matinee’s.
“SHOUT!” is the story of five women in the 1960s in London. It is told through the columnists and advertisers of fictional magazine but overtime the women in the show discover their own voice.
“You don’t have to have gone through the ‘60s to enjoy the show, but if you did it will bring back many memories,” Love said. “It’s all about the music. I think that (the audience) will be really quiet amazed at the quality of these woman’s voices – and how fun the show is. It’s going to be hard not to dance and to not sing along.”
Musical Director Curtis Powell, Choreographer Ed Aversa and Stage Manager Bonnie Turnbow help make this show come to life. The cast includes Joy Paris, Maggie Wray, Leslie Van Brink, Elaine Lyles and Caitlin Eriser.
The final two shows of the season will be director by newbies to the Flagler Playhouse, but not new faces to Flagler County.
Retired Flagler County Schools teacher Jerry Curti will direct “Picasso at the Lapin Agile.”
“Jerry is very well thought of by long-time participants at the theater and is well known in surrounding areas,” Love said. “We want to balance what we are losing with new opportunities.”
The final show of the season, “The Producers” will be directed by Michael Beaman, of St. Augustine. Auditions for “The Producers” will be held Jan. 27, and the director is looking for several strong males, as the show is a male dominated cast.
