FPC cross-country finishes fifth, 16th at Mountain Dew Invitational
The Flagler Palm Coast cross-country teams competed Sept. 15 at the Mountain Dew Invitational, in Gainesville.
The boys team finished fifth, led by Thomas Carroll, who finished in seventh place in 16 minutes, 28 seconds. Bradley Walbert (20th, 17:10), Ashton Garrett (45th, 17:40), Tyrell Roberson (49th, 17:46) and Luis Cordero (76th, 18:21) rounded out the top five FPC finishers.
The girls team finished 16th, led by Devonne Friday, who finished 68th in 21:59. Teammate Josie Davis finished 69th, with a time of 22:01. Paige Way (99th, 22:44), Sophia Clark (119th, 23:24) and Darien Halliday (146th, 24:06) rounded out the rest of the team.
“I was pleased with both teams — they all competed hard on a hilly and hot course,” FPC coach David Halliday said. Many of the runners PR'd or were very close. We need to continue to improve across the board, but a solid effort nonetheless.”
Matanzas cross-country finishes one, two at Mount Dora Invitational
The Matanzas High School cross-country teams finished in first and second place Sept. 15 at the Mount Dora Bible School Invitational, in Mount Dora.
The boys team won the meet. Cameron Allen led the way, finishing second overall with a time of 17 minutes, 42 seconds. Right behind Allen was Drake Goodman, finishing third overall in 18:52. Chris Sousa (5th, 19:12), Jonathan Cellini (7th, 19:19), Anthony Colasanti (8th, 19:21), Randy Pires (9th, 19:25) and Liam Conville (10th, 19:27) rounded out the top seven.
The girls team finished second as a team. Hannah Loder won her second consecutive invitational race when she crossed the finish line 20:39. Dina Knight (8th, 23:27), Natalie Jeffreys (17th, 24:35), Brianna Evans (22nd, 24:47) and Danica Leili (31st, 26:53) rounded out the top five.
The course, which Matanzas coach James Wolfe calls “notoriously difficult,” was about 60% grass and 40% asphalt, with challenging hills.
Palm Coast Gymnastics wins 19 medals in Aloha Invitational
Palm Coast Gymnastics competed in the Aloha Invitational Sept. 9, at the University of Tampa.
The team brought 37 competitors and came home with 19 medals — three gold, four silver and 12 bronze. The event was the first of the season for coach Kelly Hesbeens team.
Level 2, Level 3 and Level 4 finished in fourth place in the team event; Level 5 finished in third place team.
The team will compete again this weekend in Orlando.
“They have worked hard on making improvements, and I know it will show at the competition,” Hesbeens said.
Flagler Force softball wins tournament
The Flagler Force U18 fall travel softball team went 6-1 en route to winning a high school tournament Sept. 15-16, sponsored by the Port Orange Blazers.
All of the players on this new team range from 12 to 18 years old, and area all zoned for Flagler Palm Coast High School.
“The most incredible part of the story is we have only had four practices because of the rain and have only been able to get on the field twice,” said coach Lisa Bennett.
Flagler Wolfpack knocks off Putnam Bulldogs
The Flagler Wolfpack defeated the Putnam Bulldogs, 12-0, Saturday, Sept. 15. The Wolfpack is a varsity team member of the Flagler Youth Football league.
