Ten races are in the books, and the Palm Coast Race Series has come to a close — for now.

The Autumn Trails 5K concluded the first season, and Jose Musso, of Palm Coast, and Sue O’Malley, of Port Orange, were the overall male and female winners.

Musso, 37, won five of the eight races he competed in. O’Malley, 52, took first place in all five of her races.

Musso (69 points) finished 45 points ahead of second-place finisher Dan Matuszczak, and O’Malley (50 points) finished 21 points ahead of second-place finisher Carrie Meng.

A total of 863 individuals from ages 3 to 81 received points for placing in the top five positions of their respective age groups in one or more of the running events, according to Bob Hamlin, scoring volunteer for the city’s series.

The second installment of the Palm Coast Race Series will kick off Oct. 14, with the Pink Army Breast Center 5K Run/Walk, at Town Center. Next season, there will be 10 races.

“Lisa Gardner (events coordinator for the city) did an impressive job in pulling together the Palm Coast Race Series in a short span of time,” Hamlin said. “Running events in Palm Coast have increased from just a few per year to the point where there is a waiting list to join the 10 event series. The expansive trail system in Palm Coast has contributed to the spurt in growth of the running community.”
