Lady Pirates golf loses to Spruce Creek
The Matanzas High School Lady Pirates golf team lost to Spruce Creek Wednesday, Sept. 12, at Grand Haven. Matanzas’ lowest four scores combined for 201 strokes. Spruce Creek finished the day with a 180 four-player total.

The loss dropped Matanzas to 2-3 this season.

The Lady Pirates will compete in the St. Johns River Athletic Conference tournament Sept. 24. Then, on Sept. 26, Matanzas looks to get revenge on Spruce Creek at the Flagler/Volusia tournament.

Pirates bowling sweeps Mainland
The Matanzas girls bowling team shutout Mainland, 7-0, Wednesday, at Coquina Lanes. The boys team also won their match, 5-2.

The Lady Pirates (4-1) had standout games by Sam Leflar, Shana Taulbee and Shelby Taulbee.

The boys team (4-1) had a standout performance by Branden Gynizio, who bowled a 619 series.

Matanzas swimming splits with Mainland
The Matanzas High School swimming teams split the Sept. 11 meet with Mainland, as the girls team won, 196-62, and the boys team lost, 141-94.

The girls 200-yard medley relay team dominated the field, finishing in 2:00.40 — about 27 seconds faster than the second place Matanzas B relay team. The A team comprises Carley Stinchcomb, Kylie Allen, Madison O’Keefe and Emily Petkovsek.

Allen also won the 200-yard free style by about 45 seconds.

On the boys side, Brian Barth won the boys 100-yard freestyle, finishing in 56.57 seconds.

Matanzas volleyball falls to Warner Christian
The Matanzas volleyball team lost to Warner Christian on three straight sets Tuesday, 25-22, 25-13 and 25-23.

Although the loss dropped the Lady Pirates to 0-4 this season, first-year coach Julie Menendez said she is seeing improvement.

“(They were) great games (Tuesday night),” she said. “(We’re) getting stronger and better as a team each set.”
