Shiver me timbers: 150 dock on Treasure Island

A crew of swashbucklers barged into the dinner tent Saturday, Oct. 20, at the Night on Treasure Island fundraiser for the Josh Crews Writing Project.

“Empty all your pockets of money and things, we are here to relieve you of you ill-gotten gains,” their fearless leader said to the crowd of about 150 pirate pretenders.

The crew wasn't just a group of any old pirates. They were the St. Augustine Swashbucklers, who were at the fundraiser to take pirate impersonators captive until they were ransomed.

The Josh Crews Writing Project was created by family and friends after Crews died last year.

Proceeds from last year’s fundraiser raised enough funds to buy a Flagler County Education Foundation Take Stock In Children scholarship, and that was the goal for this year, too.

A memorial scholarship fund was set up to continue Crews’ legacy of encouraging and empowering young creative writers in Flagler County's elementary schools.
