+ Ashley Pelose: Rotary’s Athlete of the Month
Ashley Pelose, a senior at Matanzas High School, was named as the Rotary Student-Athlete of the Month for March.

Pelose lifts for the girls weightlifting team and plays second base and shortstop for the Lady Pirates softball team.

She has an unweighted 3.92 GPA and is ranked No. 8 in her class.

Pelose has been a member of the softball team for three seasons — as captain the past two. In addition to volunteering at a doctor’s office, Pelose also volunteers at a soup kitchen in Daytona Beach.

This season, she is batting .333 with five doubles and two triples for the Lady Pirates.

“I have had the opportunity to watch (Ashley) develop her physical, mental and social leadership skills in softball and in school,” said Matanzas softball coach Sara Novak. “I’ve come to realize that Ashley is a natural leader, and her will to never quit and always give 100% effort is never-ending.”

Novak said she’s an inspiration to her teammates.

“Her perseverance to achieve in both her academics and her athletics made her a deserving candidate,” Novak said.
