FPC outscored Matanzas, 4-1, in the second half March 13. FPC is now 3-0 in the district.

Flagler Palm Coast limited Matanzas to just one goal in the second half March 13, hanging on to a two-goal halftime lead to beat the Lady Pirates, 9-4, in a District 6 girls lacrosse showdown.

The Lady Bulldogs (5-3, 3-0 District 6) opened up the scoring about four minutes into the first half and then scored again about four minutes later to take a 2-0 lead.

Matanzas’ Stephanie Giminez tallied the Lady Pirates’ first goal with about 14 minutes remaining in the first half, but FPC responded, taking a 3-1 lead.

Matanzas then scored back-to-back goals in about a four-minute span to tie the game, 3-3.

The Lady Bulldogs closed out the first half on a two-goal run to lead 5-3.

FPC’s defense tightened up in the second half, allowing just one Lady Pirates goal. Offensively, FPC scored four goals in the second half.

FPC was led in scoring by Maria Meza, who scored four goals and had one assist. Cassie Crain had two goals, two assists; Kelly Kastner had one goal and two assists; and Kim Ramirez had two goals.

Lady Bulldogs first-year coach James Hackett said his team is still learning to become a two-half team.

Through the early part of the season, Hackett said, his team has struggled in the first half. Against Matanzas, that was not the case, he added.

“Good things that are happening so far are that the girls play hard, they are tough, fight for wins and never give up,” he said. “They are figuring out the defense and offense.”

Matanzas fell to 5-1 this season (2-1 in District 6). Coach Bill Hanrahan said his team will continue to develop and grow.

“The team continues to work on fundamentals and strong team concepts,” Hanrahan said. “Our goal remains to improve daily and win districts.”

The District 6 lacrosse tournament will be held at Matanzas High School next month.
