The European Village will open Sunday, Aug. 19, to participate in a fundraiser for Glenwood-based pet nonprofit, Journey’s End Animal Sanctuary.
From noon to 6 p.m., Shakespeare's Fine English Tea Room will lead the event with an “Afternoon Tea” presentation, along with La Piazza Café, Mezzaluna Pizzeria and other European Village businesses opening to donate a portion of their proceeds to the animal safe house.
Founded by Florence Thuot and her late husband, Paul, Journey’s End was established in 1974.
“Flo is a remarkable woman, having taken on the huge, thankless job of steward for these beautiful, neglected, abused and special-needs animals,” said Deborah Susswein, who organizes local animal events with fellow volunteer Jill Carpenter.
Local artists, potters and craft vendors will also be set up in the courtyard, where live music will be played all afternoon, while raffles are drawn and kids get their faces painted.
At 84 years old, Tuot provides lifetime care for dogs, cats, horses, pigs, sheep and birds. With a current capacity of about 300 animals at her organization’s Glenwood sanctuary, which is close to DeLand, Journey’s End has a waiting list for entry.
“We hope to expand our facility, with the help of public donations and generous benefactors,” Susswein added.
Previously, Florence and Paul Thuot worked as animal cruelty investigators for the Volusia County Sheriff’s Department. The event is free. Tickets for the reservation-only lunch at Shakespeare's English Tea Room are $25.

Music will also be played by blues singer Rhonda Jones and the rock band JeNDeR. Most European Village shops that are normally closed on Sunday will be open that day, as well, and will donate a percentage our their sales to Journey’s End.
