The Matanzas Pirates received an invitation to attend the Adidas 7 on 7 Tournament in Tampa on June 10-12, but that will cost money. And so, the dedicated players are holding multiple fundraisers to afford the overnight trip.

“You are entitled to breathe, everything else you must earn.” Coach Robert ripley, of Matanzas High School Football

“The kids have a good awareness of what needs to be done, and are working hard to raise the money,” said Robert Ripley, Matanzas High School football coach.

The team pulled together to create a donation web page, and an informative video to reach out to the community. Watch the video, and make a donation at bit.ly/1PDSV2V.

In another attempt to raise funds, each player is selling coupon cards that give recipients discounts to local restaurants and businesses. The team’s goal is to raise $5,000 by Sunday, Feb. 28.

“Not only is the fundraising necessary to provide the kids with new equipment, but the process of earning money is a good lesson in responsibility,” Ripley said. “The kids need to understand that in order to receive the things they want in life, they have to work hard for them, and that nothing is going to get handed to them. I tell the kids, ‘You are entitled

to breathe. Everything else you must earn.’”

Ripley strives to make the Adidas tournament a tradition for the players to look forward to every year.

“The tournament is an opportunity for team bonding, and for the kids to branch out, and explore a different side of Florida.” said Ripley.

This is the first year the team is exploring the option to attend the tournament.

“This year we are the foundation for the future of Matanzas football. I feel great helping out, because I know it will pay off in the future for the underclassmen,” Nikolas Polite, senior varsity football player at Matanzas High School.
