An unknown pedestrian  was hit around 8 a.m. Thursday, on U.S. 1, just south of West Plain Street, in Bunnell, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Preliminary investigations indicate Gerlad Szostak, 68, of Ormond Beach, was traveling southbound on U.S. 1, the report states.

The pedestrian, for unknown reasons, entered a nonpedestrian controlled area and crossed the southbound travel lanes of U.S. 1. The right front of Szostak’s 2011 Ford Taurus struck the pedestrian.

The pedestrian was listed in critical condition and was brought to Halifax Hospital. Charges are pending.

The investigation is ongoing, and next of kin has not been notified. Alcohol has not been ruled out, according to troopers.
