Flagler County’s tourist development tax collections are up 14% this year from 2013, and they’re expected to continue to rise, Tourist Development Council chief Matt Dunn said in a presentation at a Flagler County Commission meeting May 5.
Dunn’s presentation came with the arrival of National Travel and Tourism Week, established through a congressional resolution in 1983.
“In the state of Florida, as we celebrate National Travel and Tourism Week, research shows that 20.1 million in-state travelers are contributing to the overall tax collection of the state,” Dunn said. The numbers were even higher for out-of-state and international visitors, he said: 94.7 million came to Florida in 2013.
“One job for every 85 visitors is funded based off of visitor spending, so that’s something that we monitor on an annual basis, and hope that number will continue to rise as it has over the past few years,” Dunn said.
To keep track of visitor spending, the TDC is setting benchmarks and using event-based economic activity tracking.
“This renewed focus, proven methods of advertising, and new system of tracking the economic impact of visitor-related projects will allow us to quantify the contributions that we not only make here locally within Flagler County, but certainly within the state of Florida as well,” he said.
The TDC will celebrate National Travel and Tourism Week with its annual Hospitality Employees Recognition of Excellent Service Awards Ceremony May 12 at the Hilton Garden Inn at 55 Town Center Boulevard.
