The Chi Delta Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, in conjunction with The Ivy Community Foundation Inc., presented its fifth-annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Service to Humanity Awards Saturday, Jan. 14, during a luncheon at the African American Cultural Society Center.
The Ethel Hedgeman Lyle Service Awards, named after the sorority’s founding member, were awarded to William Seeney and Erma Brooks.
Seeney serves as a commissioner for the Flagler County Housing Authority, is president and a charter member of the Eagles Golf Club of Palm Coast, president of Union Montclair Housing Corp. Board, mentor for the African American Mentor Program, director of activities for the Beta Delta Lambda chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity and trustee of First Church Palm Coast.
Brooks founded the Flagler Palm Coast High School Ebony Society in 1991, to enhance the education and cultural awareness of African American students. Brooks is also a founding member of the African American Cultural Society and part of the Carver Community Center Council Partnership.
The Coretta Scott King Humanitarian Award was presented to Dr. Morris Carter, past chief of medical staff at the Community Hospital of Bunnell. Carter is also the co-founder and past president of the Flagler County Medical Society. The Flagler County Health Department created the Dr. Morris R. Carter Award of Excellence to be given annually to a person who has contributed extraordinary service. In addition, the city of Bunnell named a street in his honor Jan. 27, 2011.
Jeroline McCarthy was awarded the Media Connection award for her service of keeping the African American community connected to the news.
The Youth Leadership Service Award was presented to Jocelyn Crockett, a senior at FPC.
