Matanzas had a two-out, bases loaded throwing error in the bottom of the first inning Wednesday night, and the Lady Pirates couldn’t rebound against Baker County in the Class 5A regional quarterfinals, losing 6-0, and ending its season.

Matanzas finished the season 12-14. Amber Johnson (10-12) was the losing pitcher for the Lady Pirates.

Coach Sara Novak said it was exciting for her team to experience the state playoffs for the first time.

“This was an awesome experience for our team and an accomplishment that some teams never get to see,” Novak said. “I am very proud of them.”

Novak said the team will continue to do strength and weight training in the offseason, which she says helped the team this year.

“We have showed true progression as a team, and this season showed that by going this far and having this accomplishment for our program,” Novak said.

Gabrielle Prickett and Ashley Pelose each went 1-for-3 with a single.
