Lady Pirates weightlifting wrap up historic season

It was a job well done. The Matanzas Lady Pirates weightlifting team sent seven girls to the state final meet, and five of the girls placed in the Top 15 of their divisions – four in the Top 10 – Friday, Feb. 5, in Kissimmee.

Senior Kayla Walker-White made history, becoming the first female lifter at the school to ever place and medal in state competition. Her teammates, Danielle Thompson, Sarah Dillion and Samantha Brown, each placed eighth with new personal records, and Kaylee Mandt took 12th in her division. Although Blair Shane and Bianca Siqueira did not place high, they both hit new personal records as well.

“It was a really exciting experience for all of our girls, especially knowing we have four of the strongest girls in the state,” coach Sara Novak said. “It’s also great to know that Danielle, Sarah, Kaylee and Bianca will all be back next year, and they’re going to work hard and get even stronger with promise to make it back to states.”

The Lady Pirates won their conference, district and regional championship this season, making it the most successful season, by far, in the program’s history.

Giddens finished with 15 points and seven rebounds, and Aybar had 13. Devonte Charles also added 11 points with six rebounds, and Gerrod Wagner had four points and 10 rebounds.
