Flagler Palm Coast finishes third in districts, advances eight wrestlers to regionals
Flagler Palm Coast sent 12 wrestlers to the District 2-3A tournament this weekend, and eight will advance to Saturday’s Class 3A, Region 1 meet, which will take place Feb. 15-16, at University High School.
FPC coach Tom Bartolotta said he is confident all eight of the wrestlers who advanced have a shot at qualifying for states.
“They have done well all year placing and winning some major tournaments,” Bartolotta said. “We are looking to have an excellent tournament, and I am proud of these wrestlers and the program.”
In the 126-pound class, Collin Larocco, who came into the district tournament as the No. 2 seed, pinned Johnny Morgan, of Winter Springs, in the finals to take first place. Morgan came into the meet ranked ninth in the state.
Larocco improved his season record to 27-6.
Zach Ford lost in overtime, 3-1, to defending district champion Marcus Cobb, of Winter Springs. Ford is 33-7.

113 pounds: Alfred Shavers, 2nd
120: Jake Kosachiner, 4th
126: Collin Larocco, 1st
132: Darrion Doffney, 4th

Two Florida Force players invited to U.S. training center
Miracle Porter and Jessica Bonenclark, two players on Florida Force, were invited to train at the U.S. Soccer Training Center Feb. 4, in Jacksonville.
U.S. Soccer Training Centers are designed to replicate National Team training camps. The National Governing Body of Soccer and the U.S. Olympic Committee are charged with developing teams that represent the United States in all international competitions, such as the Olympics and the World Cup. The Training Center Program is an integral part of this process.
Both Porter and Bonenclark have been identified from the Florida Force 1996/1997 team, coached by Pat Gould.
They were discovered through various tryouts and games, Gould said.
“The passion, desire and love for the game that Miracle and Jessica demonstrate has opened doors for their futures,” Gould said. “They play the game at a very high level, and I have no doubt in my mind that they will do big things in the world of soccer.”
Bragging rights in boys hoops: FPC 47, Matanzas 23
In the regular season finale for both of Flagler County’s boys high school basketball teams, Flagler Palm Coast edged out Matanzas, 47-23, on Friday.
Matanzas scored single-digit points in all four quarters. Matanzas senior Ivan Tsabak had 15 points to go along with four rebounds. FPC’s Deshawn Barbero had 12 points, four rebounds.
