+ FPC soccer falls to Pine Ridge, despite shot advantage
Pine Ridge took a 2-0 halftime lead over Flagler Palm Coast on Friday night and eventually won the game, 3-2.
It was the second straight game FPC (6-1-1) faced an early deficit. (The Bulldogs overcame two deficits last Wednesday to defeat crosstown Matanzas.)
FPC outshot the Pine Ridge, 12-6.
Steven Dack and Nicholas Varon each scored one goal.
+ Girls basketball: FPC clipped by Mandarin, 49-46
In a rematch of last season’s District 1-8A title game, Mandarin edged out Flagler Palm Coast, 49-46, on Friday night.
FPC (6-2) led 12-5 after the first quarter, but Mandarin bounced back with 21 second-quarter points to take a 26-23 lead. The Lady Bulldogs and the Lady Mustangs matched points the rest of the way.
Again, sophomore guard Armani Walker dominated the stat line with 25 points, seven steals, eight rebounds and three assists.
It was also a physical game, as the two teams combined for 45 fouls.
+ FPC honors Pete Hald on Dec. 5 for 350th win
Flagler Palm Coast recognized girls soccer coach Pete Hald on Dec. 5 for achieving 350 career wins.
Hald won No. 350 on Nov. 20 against Tampa Catholic. He started the program in 1991.
+ Tsabak scores 13, but Matanzas loses to Nease
Matanzas senior Ivan Tsabak scored 13 points (including three 3-pointers), but the Pirates lost to Nease, 62-39, on Friday night.
Matanzas (2-4) fell behind in the first quarter and played catch-up the rest of the game.
+ PAL baseball registration now open until Jan. 23
Registration for the 2013 Flagler County Police Athletic League is open now until Jan. 23. The season will begin March 2.

+ Hopkins done for season, FPC edges Spruce Creek
Flagler Palm Coast led Spruce Creek, 20-7, after the first quarter Monday night en route to a 64-58 win — its first win without senior point guard Tyler Hopkins.
Hopkins will miss the remainder of the season with a torn ACL.
FPC (5-4) was led in scoring by Willie Gardner’s 16 points. He also grabbed eight rebounds, collected four assists and three steals.
Deshawn Barbero, the team’s other starting guard, contributed with 17 points (nine-for-12 on free throws), four rebounds and three assists. Sam Cooper notched 12 points and five steals.
FPC travels to Mandarin on Friday for a District 1-8A game and then hosts Palatka on Dec. 17.
+ Monsanto: Rotary’s Scholar Athlete of the Month
Nicholas Monsanto, a senior at Flagler Palm Coast High School, was named as the Rotary Club of Flagler County’s Senior Scholar Athlete for November.
Monsanto is a captain and defender on the Bulldogs soccer team, which is 6-1-1 this season.
He is in the International Baccalaureate program and sports a 4.3 GPA. Monsanto has recorded more than 300 hours of community service and plans to attend college, where he hopes to play soccer and major in athletic administration.
+ Flagler PAL cheerleaders place fifth at nationals
The Flagler Police Athletic League Pee Wee cheerleaders placed fifth at the national competeition on Dec. 4, at the ESPN Wide World of Sports, in Orlando.
Lisa Asbill, who is in her first year as head coach, said she is blessed for what her team was able to accomplish.
The team was able to raise about $6,000 in five days to be able to pay for the trip, Asbill said.
“I am so humbled that my first season was so successful, but most of all, I have grown to love these girls and hope that I made a difference to them,” Asbill said.
+ Thomas Carroll finishes eighth, Hannah Loder finishes 16th in all-star running meet
Thomas Carroll, of FPC, and Hannah Loder, of Matanzas, both competed in the Florida Athletic Coaches Association Senior All-Star cross-country meet on Dec. 1, in Tallahassee.
Carroll, who ran for the North Team, finished second for the team and eighth overall, in 16 minutes, 12 seconds.
He was the first FPC runner since 2006 to be invited to run.
Loder, of Matanzas, also ran for the North Team, and finished third for the team and 16th overall, in 20:07.
+ Slow start dooms Matanzas in basketball loss to Nease
The Lady Pirates managed to score just four points in the first quarter on Friday night against Nease, eventually losing, 76-28.
Matanzas (3-5) also scored two points in the third quarter.
Fifteen of Matanzas’ 28 points came via the 3-pointer, as Alyssa Lamb and Margaret Calhoun combined for five. Calhoun finished with 10 points, leading Matanzas in scoring.
Nease scored more than 20 points in three of the four quarters.
