Eddie Johnson: 2012 MLS Comeback Player of the Year
Whatever doubts remained that Eddie Johnson hadn’t returned to form can now be eliminated.

Johnson was named the 2012 MLS Comeback Player of the Year on Tuesday — an award that’s voted on by media, MLS players and MLS club management based on regular season performance.

Johnson won the same award in 2007.

In his first full season back playing in the U.S., Johnson tallied 16 goals (17 in all competitions) and two assists, leading the Seattle Sounders to the Western Conference finals.

Johnson took to his Twitter account Tuesday morning: “Wanna thank the people who made this award a reality for me. To the entire Sounders organization, thank you for a great season.”

After replying to a few fans on Twitter, he added: “Oh yeah, and most importantly, I share this award with all my fans. Thanks for the continued support. #hardworkdedication”

Johnson’s resurgence has also reignited his hopes of making the U.S. Men’s National Team for FIFA 2014 World Cup.

Last month, Johnson netted two goals, including the game-winner, in a World Cup qualifying match against Antigua and Barbuda.

“I want to share this award with the kids in Bunnell and Flagler County,” Johnson said. “That dreams are real if you work toward them.”

Eddie Johnson is back.

Mardy Gilyard re-signs with the New York Jets
Less than a week after being released by the Philadelphia Eagles, former Flagler Palm Coast star Mardy Gilyard has re-signed with the New York Jets.

Gilyard signed with the Jets prior to the start of the regular season for a five-day stint, but he never actually donned the Jets uniform.

With several injuries to the Jets receiving corps, Gilyard could see work as a wideout and on special teams.

Gilyard has signed with three different teams since he was drafted 99th overall in the 2010 NFL Draft.

Davis saves seven shots, Bulldogs beat Spruce Creek
Drew Jones scored the lone goal Tuesday night, as the Flagler Palm Coast boys soccer team knocked off district foe Spruce Creek, 1-0. FPC (4-0-1, 2-0-1 District 2-5A) remains undefeated on the season and in first place in the district. Bulldogs keeper Austin Davis tallied seven saves in the game.

Walker’s double-double vaults FPC past Mainland
Flagler Palm Coast guard Armani Walker is only a sophomore, but she’s playing like a seasoned veteran.

Walker’s double-double on Wednesday night led the Lady Bulldogs past Mainland, 59-23.

With the win, FPC improved to 4-1.

Walker finished the game leading all scorers with 23 points. But the Lady Bulldogs point guard isn’t a one-trick baller. She snatched six rebounds, dished out three assists and came away with 10 steals to cap off the double-double.

Ivana Boyd added seven points, eight rebounds, two assists and five steals.

FPC got off to a hot start, outscoring Mainland, 19-5, in the first quarter. The Lady Bulldogs defense only allowed Mainland to score eight second-half points.
