William Fleming was jailed Dec. 9, on a drug charge.
Weeks after Flagler County Sheriff Donald Fleming urged the city and county to slow the abuse of prescription drugs, a traffic stop landed his son in jail.
William Fleming, 34, was arrested Thursday, Dec. 9, on a charge of possession of a controlled substance without a prescription. It began with a 5 p.m. traffic stop on Palm Harbor Parkway and Colorado Drive, according to Sheriff’s Office report.
Deputies conducted a traffic stop on the Toyota Camry being driven by Fleming, who “was having trouble maintaining his lane of travel.” Fleming then exited the vehicle to speak with the deputy. Fleming said the car was a rental because his car was in the shop. It was discovered that the 27-year-old passenger with Fleming was on probation for grand theft. Because of her, Fleming was required to allow the deputy to search the inside of the vehicle, the report states.
The search found a Marlboro cigarette package containing 3.5 Xanax pills, according to the report.
Fleming didn’t have a prescription for the drugs.
“This is an issue that my family is dealing with, much like other families around the country,” Sheriff Donald Fleming said in statement. “I will continue my pilgrimage to stop the proliferation of pill mills in Flagler County and across the state. As unfortunate as this incident is, his arrest may save his life.”
The charge is a second-degree felony and, if convicted, could lead up to five years in prison.
The sheriff nor the agency will have further comment on this pending legal matter.
William Fleming was transported to the Flagler County Inmate Facility where he was being held Friday, Dec. 10, in lieu of $1,000.
