The Flagler County School District is striving for an elusive A-rating, a goal that just got harder: Now, the top ranking is bestowed on just five districts in the state.
“Our ranking is the highest we’ve had in a decade,” said Shawn Schmidli, coordinator of assessment, accountability and equity for the Flagler County School District. “We’re currently ranked 11th in the state. We’ve moved up in the last three years from 29th to 19th to 11th”
The district as a whole received a B grade with a score of 509. It would need a score of 525 to be awarded an A rating.
The last time the Flagler County School District received an A rating was for the 2010-2011 school year. Then, the district ranked 29th in the state, and 30 out of 67 districts in the state received the same rating.
So while it may appear that the district is doing worse based on rating alone, Schmidli said, the state has just gotten more selective in awarding the highest ratings.
While school grades throughout the district dropped this year, this reflects only the stricter standards for rating that the state enacted this year, Schmidli said. Student achievement —and FCAT scores — are increasing.
“We’ve been chasing that A rating thinking that if we scored in the top 17 (school districts), we'd be there,” Schmidli said. “But now, we’re shooting for the Top 5 instead.”
