A Palm Coast man was arrested Sunday evening and charged with attempted armed robbery in connection with the robbery attempt at a local gas station, officials said Monday afternoon.
Aaron Kinney, 33, of the B-section, may also be responsible for two other weekend holdups that took place in Palm Coast, according to detectives.
Kinney was being held Monday in the Flagler County Inmate Facility in lieu of $27,000 on charges of attempted robbery with a deadly weapon, resisting arrest without violence and driving with a suspended license.
Kinney is being charged with walking into the Mobile gas station, on State Road 100, around 7:11 p.m. Sunday and brandishing a knife while demanding money from the clerk, according to a report.
When the clerk did not hand over any cash, Kinney then exited the store, but he was located minutes later traveling westbound on State Road 100, near Bulldog Drive (by Flagler Palm Coast High School).
Deputies caught up with Kinney around Landings Boulevard, toward the rear of Rent-A-Center. When the car came to a complete stop, and before Sheriff's Office deputies could set up, Kinney stepped out of the vehicle and began walking toward the deputies.
"He was advised several times (by the deputies) to put his hands on his head and walk back toward us, but (Kinney) did not comply," the report states.
After numerous commands were given to Kinney, he walked back toward the driver's side door of his car and told deputies, "I need to make a call."
When Kinney reached into the car, the deputy deployed his Taser into the back of Kinney.
"(Kinney) then fell backward on the concrete as a result of the Taser deployment," the report states.
The gas station clerk was called to the scene and positively identified Kinney as the would-be robber.
According to the Flagler County Sheriff's Office website, Kinney was previously arrested in 2007 on possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia charges. Then, in 2010, Kinney was arrested for driving with a suspended driver's license with knowledge.
Detectives also consider Kinney a person of interest in the two other robberies over the weekend. In all three incidents, the robber used a knife to threaten the clerk.
The first incident took place around 1:16 p.m. Saturday, when a male robbed the Shell gas station, located off Celico Way, in Palm Coast.
Detectives said the white male was carrying a knife that was tucked to his right side under his shirt when he entered the store. He pulled the knife out, walked behind the counter and threatened the clerk.
After being given an undetermined amount of cash, the robber fled on foot out the door.
Then, nearly 24 hours later, deputies believe the same man entered the BP station at 2245 Old Dixie Highway, in southern Flagler County. The clerk inside told deputies the man entered the store around 12:26 p.m. Sunday, selected a soft drink and placed it on the counter.
He then pulled a 10- to 12-inch knife and demanded money from the register. He fled the store on foot, but then got into a vehicle and headed eastbound on Old Dixie Highway toward Interstate 95. At the time, deputies believed that the man got into either a Chevrolet Cavalier or a Pontiac Sunfire. Kinney was arrested Monday in a Pontiac Sunfire.
No one was injured in any of the incidents.
Under investigation: Flagler Beach policeman's wife shot
Detectives are investigating a Friday evening shooting at the West Flagler home of a Flagler Beach police officer, officials said Monday.
Detectives are reporting Kathy MacDonald, the wife of Flagler Beach patrolman Robert MacDonald, was airlifted Friday evening to Halifax Medical Center after she suffered a single gunshot wound to the head, according to Flagler County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Debra Johnson.
She remained hospitalized Monday. The incident occurred at 6:33 p.m. at the MacDonald home, Johnson said.
The incident is under investigation and additional details will be released as they become available.
