It took six years, but the Matanzas boys lacrosse team can finally say they beat Nease.

The Pirates (1-0) edged out Nease, 6-5, on Wednesday in the season opener — and the first game for coach Jeff Goren.

It marks the second time Matanzas beat Nease, and the first time ever on Nease’s field.

"This is one of the most intense lacrosse games I have ever been a part of,” Goren said Thursday morning. “My boys played with passion and intensity from the first whistle to the last.”

Jake Cohill and Gunner Parson led the charge with two goals each. Josh Holbrook and Yan Lishinsky each scored one goal.

“Josh (Holbrook) was all over the field, playing shutdown defense as well as contributing on our lethal man-up unit,” Goren said.

Matt Gutierrez anchored the defense by continuously turning away the Nease Panther shooters, tallying 14 saves on the night.

Matanzas plays Flagler Palm Coat 2 p.m. Saturday, at FPC.
