PCO staff wins first in General Excellence

The Palm Coast Observer team took home eight awards from the Florida Press Association 2013 Better Weekly Newspaper Awards held Friday, July 11, in Miami, including first place in General Excellence for circulation with more than 15,000.

Judges’ comments praised the Palm Coast Observer for its front page layout saying that it “invites the reader to dig further into the paper.”

The Nov. 7, 2014, edition was selected as the overall winner for the general excellence category with remarks also being made about the business excellence awards section.

Additional first place awards were won by Community Editor Shanna Fortier in the category of Feature Photo and Executive Editor Brian McMillan in the category of Spot News Photo.

Former Sports Editor Andrew O’Brien was awarded second place for his sports feature story, “Miracle Marvins,” and former Design Editor Mallorie Bruce won second place for overall graphic design.

Fortier also won second place in Portfolio Photography. Comments read, “Nice work capturing the many aspects of your community.”

Third place awards were given to Fortier in the Sports Picture category and McMillan in the Serious Column category.
